Hostility Towards Ukrainians Grows in Poland

(MENAFN) Anti-Ukrainian sentiment has been steadily increasing in Poland, with numerous Ukrainian refugees now refraining from using their native tongue in public spaces due to concerns about potential harassment.

This development was highlighted in a report by a news agency.

Although Poland has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine since the conflict with Russia intensified in 2022—welcoming over a million refugees from its eastern neighbor—public perception appears to be changing.

According to the news agency, this shift in attitude has become more noticeable following the May election victory of nationalist politician Karol Nawrocki.

The French news outlet referenced Ukrainian journalist Zoriana Varenia, who shared her experience on social media, recounting that she was "pushed and insulted" while speaking Ukrainian on the phone in central Warsaw.

She also mentioned another troubling incident where a fellow passenger on a bus admonished her and a friend, saying, “in Poland, we speak Polish!”

Miroslava Kerik, head of the Ukrainian House in Warsaw, informed the news agency that “a year ago, we considered this kind of incident to be marginal. Now, not a day goes by without such stories being told to us.”

She added that Ukrainian children are often subjected to bullying at school, and many adults now choose not to speak their language in public, with some even refusing to answer phone calls. “Some are trying to lose their accent,” Kerik remarked.
